interview (in-person) · words · creative direction
Scurrying into the upstairs Feast offices, surrounded by a team of people, it was quite easy to miss the pint-sized performer. But soon enough Dannii’s smile and piercing blue eyes appeared through the mayhem. Super casual in a pair of cons, white jeans and a leather jacket, I instantly knew we would get along. Make a wish! I pass her a chocolate covered cupcake as she shrieks with glee and blows out the flickering candle on top. What better way to celebrate your birthday than with SA Style, right? As we begin chatting like girlfriends catching up over coffee, I almost forget to press record. A fashion icon, designer, mum, television host and global superstar in the music industry, let’s find out a little more about Dannii Minogue.

Any places you’re hoping to visit while you’re in Adelaide?

Right before coming here I had a look at different Instagram accounts, after seeing all the amazing pictures there are so many places I wanted to visit. I won’t have time to do everything, especially since there are so many beautiful places to see out of town. I have a friend arriving who’s from Adelaide so she’ll be in charge of choosing some hot spots to visit in our small window of time.

We missed seeing you on X Factor Australia this year. Are you looking to get back into TV anytime soon?

“Oh thank you. I’m doing a little bit of work in the UK at the moment and flying back and forth from there. I have another show that I’m judging, it’s a new show for the BBC. This year I’ve taken [time] out to be with my son who’s just started school. I’ve even done the day working in the canteen, being terrorised by young children. Just doing mum stuff and stepping away from it.”

How’s life been since becoming a mum?

Ethan’s 6 now, and when he was really small it was quite easy because he could just be with me the whole time. Backstage I could just set up a crèche for him and come in and out. But now he’s at school and that just turns everything [around]. He needs that consistency. Doing the X Factor just wasn’t going to allow for that because we would have to relocate to Sydney for 4 months… and that’s without all the auditions, other filming, travelling and being away. That just wasn’t going to be in my plan for him while he starts school. I didn’t want to be in a different state, working 16 hours a day getting a phone call saying: ‘he’s freaking out and doesn’t want to go to school’ and not be there.
